Justin Nozuka - April, 2010

Hello!

Intern Katie Stein here again to tell you about the wonderful Glasssnote week I’ve had. This week Justin Nozuka was in town promoting his new album, You I Wind Land and Sea, that was released on April 13th. I’ve been jamming out to this album for the last few months so I was certainly psyched to hear him perform live! He first got in on Tuesday, which is the day he got to perform on The Late Show with David Letterman. I watched the awesome performance on tv Tuesday night and couldn’t wait for the next day when I got to see him perform a full concert at Hiro Ballroom here in New York.

After our usual meeting on Wednesday the other interns and I got the chance to see Justin perform a few songs at a special performance. He along with his guitarist Mark Pelizzer played Heartless, My Heart is Yours, and After Tonight and it definitely whet my appetite for the full set later in the evening. Besides being a great performer, he was also a great guy to work for due to his pleasant and kind demeanor. Although he’s got lots of fans and girls swooning for him, he stays humble and down to Earth.



When his set started at 9:30 at the Hiro Ballroom (appropriate venue since his very proud father’s name is Hiro), the crowd was buzzing with excitement. The set lasted approximately an hour and fifteen minutes and Justin and his band kept it exciting for the entire time. He is a rare talent that blends many different genres into his music and, after seeing how hard he and the team that supports him work, I truly believe that he deserves all the success in the world!

Be sure to catch him tomorrow on the CBS Early Show from 7AM to 9AM. I know I will!

VA Writing Trip

The Snow Doesn’t Stop The Music!

This past weekend, Ryan Downing (from Jonas Sees In Color) & I trekked over to Washington DC/Northern Virginia for some writing sessions. By some miracle, we both got there with relatively no fuss, despite a huge blizzard brewing in NYC at the time! We don’t let Mother Nature stop us!

As always with these writing trips, it was work work work, nose to the grindstone. BUT that doesn’t mean that we didn’t have fun. Ryan’s co-writer & his manager were super hospitable, welcoming us both into their home studios for these sessions. And their families were at once amazed and curious as to what we were up to. HITS, that’s what!

I can’t play the songs for you just yet, but here’s a sneak lyrical peak at one of the HOTT TRAX that they came up with this weekend:

“She gets why boy bands are always hated
But she swears the Backstreet Boys are underrated

Compost Cookies

COOKIES NOM NOM NOM.

I know the Cookie Monster has decided that cookies are a sometime snack. But I would definitely be okay with them being an all the time snack, especially if they are compost cookies from Momofuku Milk Bar (13th St & 2nd Ave).

I know compost + cookie = delicious is not an equation that sounds right, but trust me it is. This cookie could quite possible be the best cookie I have ever had. It has pretzels, potato chips, coffee, oats, butterscotch, chocolate chips (though I couldn’t taste the coffee).

Milk Bar also serves up some soft serve genius, cereal milk soft serve. I was too intrigued not try some, and I am happy I did.

I love Milk Bar, Anderson Cooper loves Milk Bar, so what are you waiting for?

Videos we like - "Giving Up The Gun"

Normally I do not like tripping. I look silly, and some times I hurt myself, but I really enjoyed stumbling across the new Vampire Weekend video for “Giving Up the Gun”.

It is funny, has some pretty amazing cameos, as well as good cinematography. When this all happens and it works with the music, well that is something I like a lot.

Mumford & Sons at Bowery Ballroom!

Hello there internet!

I’m Dayton and I just started out as an intern at Glassnote and my first month here certainly has been jam packed, but our first show with a band was last Thursday.

Suffice it to say, I was excited.

Some of the other people from the office and myself arrived early to help out with set up and anything else that might be going on before the show and we ended up seeing the soundcheck for Mumford & Sons. As it drew closer to show time, the excitement started to become more palpable. I’ve seen these guys play a few times, but I’ve never really seen them rock out. They just hadn’t been given a chance to do so until tonight.

The doors open, the people stream in. And then the lights went down.

As openers go, Freelance Whales were pretty good. They warmed up the crowd and prepped them with their vocal harmonies and the instrument switching, but when Mumford came on stage, it was clear to see who the crowd came for. To say the room was packed is a bit of an understatement. I had moved down to near the front of the stage but got stuck about four rows back from the front. Every time I raised my hands to applaud, I came up with an arm full of some womans hair. The lack of personal space was worth it though to get as close as I did.

And Mumford put on a hell of a show, all of them pulling double duty on various instruments and flying through a set which had people singing along to most of their songs despite their record having just come out two days before in America! Although people were claiming that ‘they were all brothers’ and the Australian man kept claiming Mumford as ‘Aussies own’, there was no need to correct them. You never want to spoil an awesome night. A sweaty, awesome night.
